Hi Vicky,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We all still miss him, even after a year.

I still catch myself thinking I'll see him again, as if he's just overseas and he'll be back for a visit sometime. Only to realise that no, he isn't, and no, he won't.

*sigh*. Treasure the happy memories, I suppose, and be thankful for the time we did have.

Hi Justin, I just found out yesterday that Jarrod has passed.

He wasn't a close friend of mine, more a friend of friends and I played in a netball team with him in London for several seasons. The team disbanded as people moved on and remained in address books but not regular contact.

It was at a get-together last night where I found out. I was truly shocked and saddened to hear the news. And so it brings me to search online to get my head round life, which sometimes just doesn't make sense.

My heart goes out to all his friends and family now a year on.

Yep, it's pretty unbelievable and so are all the little incidentals. I've just written up a case study for the people who do the motion control there. They move gear weighing tonnes by 10 nanometres at a time and because the whole principle is that the synchrotron "wobbles" electrons, it all has to be super smooth. The equipment is so sensitive that the building has isolated foundations and a rubberised girder super-structure to dampen vibration.

Hi Mark,

I had something similar when I upgraded to 9.10. For me, it turned out to be an issue with NetworkManager having some manual entries for DNS that were overriding the ones received when it connected to Three.

Check the IPs in /etc/resolv.conf and compare them to the ones that show up in /var/log/syslog as the connection comes up. They should be the same.

Make sure your settings in NetworkManager will take the DNS entries provided when it connects.

Hi Mark

An initial warning, I'm very much a networking NOOB, however...

Had same problem (Ubuntu 9.10), but, could connect to ip addresses. Try entering a IP address (216.239.59.147 for Google).

If that works I seem to have got around problem by System>Preferences>Network Proxy. Then clicked 'Direct internet connection' and 'Apply System Wide'.

Have no idea at all what was causing the problem, but, so long as you either keep a record of everything you change or create a new location then trying the above shouldn't do any damage.

Good luck and best wishes of the season.

I recently did an install on a friends PC of Ubuntu 9.04. The live cd worked perfectly with the 3 mobile broadband prepaid. However, when I actually did the install the modem seems setup ok, says it's connected ok, but it doesn't find any websites. It seems to have DNS server entries setup but nothing happens - can't connect to google or the update service etc. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,

Wow. I've found Sales tend to get pretty much whatever they want, because hey, you guys bring in the money that keeps us all in a job!

Interesting that you're trusted enough to discount as required, and hopefully not too much most of the time, but you can't buy a chair? Maybe they're trying to keep you out of the office and out meeting customers? ;)

I foiund this interesting. I am a sales person and actually I am allowed to buy things of up to $1000 a time but of course I would face the same problem as anyone else If I spent that on a new 32 inch LCD...
What s more horrifying is that I make decisions on pricing every day, I can price anywhere from 100% of list price to 65% off. on the deal I did today that difference was $700K. Did I need to do that discount? Who knows? Probably, but could I have got away with discounting $200K less? we will never know, and yet I can't buy a screen, or a chair...

This rings true for me as an employee of a huge multinational company. They are more concerned with stability and consistency than individual needs.

I like your interview question, I think I might use that some day.

(The article clearly has the same themes as the classic book Peopleware. Everyone should read it.)
